HERALDIC BEASTS AT FRAMLINGHAM

One of my first discoveries, in looking at the monuments for this project, was that the south-east lion supporter, on the third duke’s tomb, does not match the rest on that monument, but in fact belongs with the three remaining on the monument to the fourth duke’s wives, on the north side of the chancel.  You can see that one supporter is missing from that monument and this one was perhaps moved to the third duke’s tomb when one of the latter monument’s beasts went missing or was damaged too severely to repair it.  There are, of course, as always, other possible explanations!

Below, the physics student Nishad Karim has highlighted the lion on our 3-D scans of the monument.
